Effects of Dietary Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) Supplementation on Production Performance of Nursery and Finishing pigs

The objective of this study was to determine effects of dietary antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) supplementation on production performance of Nursery pigs.

In the first experiment, one hundred sixty, 3 weeks of age, three cross bred (D x LW x LR) pigs were randomly assigned to 2 dietary treatments : Diet 1 control diet and Diet 2 control diet plus 1 percent extracts of AMPs.

In the second experiment, one hundred, 10 weeks of age, three cross bred (D x LW x LR) pigs were randomly assigned to 2 dietary treatments: Diet 1 control diet and Diet 2 control diet plus 0.2 percent extracts of AMPs.

The results of experiment 1 showed that pigs fed AMPs supplemental diets had no significant difference of average daily gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio when compared to control group (P>0.05).

The results of experiment 2 showed that pigs fed AMPs supplemented diets had significantly increased in average daily gain and improved feed conversion ratio when compared to control diet (P<0.05).

The results indicated that supplementation of AMPs had no effects on weight gain and feed conversion ratio in nursery pigs. However, in grower and finisher pigs, supplementation of 0.2 percent AMPs in diet improved weight gain and feed conversion ratio compared to control group. The extract of antimicrobial peptides from plants, is an alternative for farmers in improving growth performance in finishing phase.
